2018: The Year of Consistency

How many of us find it painfully challenging to stay true to our goals throughout the school year? All of us, probably. There is so many distractions, so many different pressures, that it can be very difficult to keep your eye on the prize. It is not a bad thing to be inconsistent, and it is not something to dwell on or beat yourself up about. Truthfully, developing a life of consistency is probably the most challenging and testing thing to do, especially in an environment so condensed as ours. However, I am claiming 2018 to be the year of consistency, for myself and for any and all that wish to join me. And throughout that journey it is important to remember that those goals we have, that prize we covet for ourselves, we deserve it.

Take a second now to think, what was that one thing you really wanted for yourself when you waltzed into the New Year? What makes you happy and brings light into your life? What forces draw you away from it? This all starts with awareness of the positive and negative forces that bring you up and down. For some people they may be external, for some people they may be internal. Either way, you must identify what forces are driving you in which direction. Once you can do this, you can control your actions, thoughts, and words enough to keep them motivational, positive, and compassionate throughout the course of such a challenging journey.

It is my belief that consistency does not come naturally. How many people have given up on a New Years Resolution after two weeks? Again, probably all of us. Consistency resides in a less natural state, but it is a way, way, more fulfilling one. It is a state that is not infected by toxic relationships or negative thoughts, it is a state that has no time for laziness or self-judgment, and it is a state that thrives on motivational energy. Discipline and focus are absolutely key in the seeking of consistency. You have to catch yourself if you are resorting to bad habits, and change your behavior to have more positive results. Discipline and action go hand in hand, you can’t just think about being disciplined and consistent and all of a sudden you will be, you must use your thoughts to fuel positive and fruitful actions. And you will start to see your whole life in a new light.

I am very ready for a year of consistency, because I am not ready to give up on my goals or myself. I hope you will join me in this positive and exciting mindset for the new year and new semester, and we can accomplish great things together.

Happy New Year Lake Forest College!!!
